VP Message – June 2024

Hello Ventura County Hams,

Can you believe that we are just over two weeks away from Field Day, how has the first half of this year gone by so fast? Our Field Day Committee has been busy planning all the technical aspects of handling one of the largest turnouts in the country, and we are looking forward to a fun 24 hours of operating at Oxnard College. We started the day with 12 stations last year, let’s try and make it 13 this year!

Even if you haven’t attended any of the Planning Committee or General Membership meetings, that doesn’t mean you can’t participate. On the contrary, we would love to have you come out and operate with us! There will be plenty of great food, camaraderie, and on-air time for all. No rig? No problem. There will be lots of radios for you to jump on the air and make some QSOs.

I would like to offer one more CQers Club outing at Ventura State Beach before Field Day, for anyone who would like a little more practice calling CQ and computer logging. The only weekend that I can make it work is Saturday June 15. Look for a Groups.io message soon, or just show up around 13:00 and you should see me in the front parking lot area.

This month is also one of the ARRL VHF contests, which takes place from 11:00 Saturday June 8 to 19:59 Sunday June 9 local time. The contest is open on all bands above 50 MHz and in any mode. This is a great opportunity to try and make some longer distance VHF contacts, especially if 6m opens up. The exchange is your four-character Maidenhead grid-square locator, which for Ventura County is DM04. Monitor the VHF simplex calling frequencies for traffic. Get on the air and have some fun!

I look forward to seeing lots of you at Field Day, and hope to hear you on the air soon!

73,
